Exploring Identity With Red: A Crayon's Story

The 1W class welcomed Elijah's mom, Megan, to their class for a special reading session! Megan read Red: A Crayon's Story by Michael Hall, a heartwarming tale about a blue crayon mistaken for the color red. Through this engaging picture book, they delved into identity, self-acceptance, and embracing differences.

During the heartwarming story, students were given the opportunity to express various facets of their identities among their classmates, delve into the notion of identity, highlight the distinct qualities within their classroom, and engage in a discussion about gender identity in a manner suitable for their age group.

To support the discussion's themes, each student designed their own crayon. Using prompts like "things I like," "things I don't like," and "I am feeling." They also reflected on aspects of themselves that might not be immediately visible. This exercise encouraged self-expression and fostered a deeper understanding of each other's complexities beyond what meets the eye.

The entire class enjoyed the book and activity, which helped them celebrate the beauty of individuality. Thank you, Megan!
