Women's Varsity Volleyball Finishes with Record Banners and Medals

By Cameron Stanton
At the beginning of the season, the Women’s Varsity Volleyball Team focused on their goals for the season. Their most significant goals were to win a North Coast Section (NCS) banner and earn a spot in the NorCal Tournament. These were significant to them due to this noteworthy fact: no other women’s athletic team in school history has ever raised an NCS banner Until now. As a school, athletics teams have four NCS final appearances in which they are 2-2. In other words, this team set themselves with the lofty goal of making history. As the season went on, the women realized how tough their team really was and remained dedicated to their goals. Finishing with a 19-11 record, the best regular season record in Bentley Women’s Volleyball history, the women utilized their toughness in postseason play as they advanced to the NCS Championship last Saturday and then to the NorCal tournament on Tuesday, where they faced Convent HS and University Prep respectively. While they fell short of winning both games, they accomplished their goals of raising an NCS banner and earning a spot in the NorCal Tournament.

With these two goals met, the girls are hungry for more than an NCS Championship win next year. They are looking forward to another appearance in NorCal, feeling confident that they can compete with the other teams while advancing further into the tournament. As a Division 5 school, the team was moved into the Division 4 bracket where they faced a much more dangerous opponent. The experience of playing in NorCal gave them the necessary perspective on the tenacity of the competition while playing in a rowdy environment in Redding, California. Moving forward, the keys to the team's next steps as follows: filling in the leadership of their four graduating seniors and continuing their individual maturation in the offseason through club volleyball and practice. While the seniors were instilled with the work ethic of their past years on the team, they have passed it on to the juniors and sophomores who are more than willing to meet the challenge next year.
