Women's Basketball Hosts Hoops Vs. Cancer Classic For First Time

After opening their season with a 2-0 start, our Upper School women's basketball team is looking forward to hosting the 6th Annual Hoops vs. Cancer Classic from December 12-14. While the tournament will feature eight high school basketball teams competing for first place in the tournament, all eight schools will come together to raise awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Kay Yow was a dominant force in women's basketball, most notably serving as North Carolina State's head coach for 38-years. During her time at NC State, she battled breast cancer in the public eye. Her vision was to unite players, coaches, and the women's basketball community to do something that far exceeds wins and losses on the court. Even after her passing in 2009, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund continues to extend and improve the lives of all women battling cancer by raising money for research and assisting the underserved. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Last spring, after capturing the North Coast Section women's soccer championship, and in an effort to align with almost every other California high schools, we shifted our women's soccer season from spring to winter. This past Tuesday, our team, playing in the first winter soccer match in our school's history, traveled to the Beach Chalet fields in San Francisco to take on Convent of the Sacred Heart. After a close first half, our championship grit prevailed and lead us to a 4-0 final win, and a great opening of the season. They'll play at Berean Christian this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Go Phoenix!
