My Favorite Phoenix Memory:

The story of "Luke the Legend," one of our students who stepped up to be goalie for the soccer team last year because no one else wanted the position. He learned so much and improved throughout the season—but his most impressive moment came when it counted most: against Sonoma Academy, a team we've met in the playoffs two times in recent memories and they ended the team's run. This time we were tied, went into overtime, and then into penalty kicks. Luke made incredible saves and ensured that he and his team advanced to the semi-finals, continuing their post-season run. I remember that after he made his game-winning save, the whole team tackled him, then hoisted him on their shoulders to celebrate him and everything he had given that season. That was a great moment.

My Favorite Phoenix Memory:

Cross-team connection and community-building! In my first year of coaching, the 2024 Boys' and Girls' Cross Country program wrapped up a rainy practice with outdoor team bonding. This caught the attention of former Athletic Director Ken Rancifer, who was also the Boys' Basketball Head Coach. Within minutes, both teams joined together outdoors in the pouring rain for some team-building fun!

My Favorite Phoenix Memory:

I've got two favorite Middle School Athletics memories:

  1. At the middle school sports awards assembly, with each team on the stage and the student body with rapt attention, waiting to hear which students will be recognized for their hard work during the season for their team and then cheering them on. go, phoenix!
  2. When the 7th grade boys' basketball team mobbed their teammate after he sank the winning free throw with less than 10 seconds remaining and chanted his name for the next 30 seconds.

My Favorite Phoenix Memory:

How could I choose one?! Here are a few

  1. When the Boys' Soccer team won a playoff game last year in penalties! The atmosphere was electric, everyone was standing, hanging on in rapt anticipation as each player went up to take their penalty shot. It was very special to be a part of that day!
  2. When the Boys' Basketball team beat their close league rivals three times last season.

“Boasting a 5-2 record, Gabe is leading the team as a captain and performer. Showcasing strong leadership and sportsmanship for his teammates, he demonstrates care for all, while also getting the job done each match. He has embodied both of his nicknames so far this year as the “BFG” (Big Friendly Gabe) and “Fries in the bag.” – Head Coach Collyn Luu

“Paul has demonstrated exceptional leadership on and off the court. Contributing significantly to our 20-win regular season, he is consistently vocal and willing to help others. He has helped his teammates with on and off the court responsibilities, while also taking initiative in courting opponents and providing meaningful perspective during film sessions in preparation for competition.” – Head Coach Justin Standley

“Isabel’s commitment and determination have come full circle this year as she leads the program in offensive stats. From practices to games, Isabel is always present and ready to work. The Bentley pillars of character, purpose, and community are the common throughlines of our athletic program. Our student-athletes commit to their academic enrichment, to their own character development, and to their teammates and peers.

Character

Athletics at Bentley School encompasses more than just competition. Remaining in line with the school’s mission statement, athletics is another venue for teaching, educating, and character-building.

Competition provides opportunities to cultivate crucial values such as sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity, commitment, and self-discipline.

Purpose

The Bentley Athletics Program empowers our students to find a sense of belonging and purpose outside of the classroom, building their confidence and identity in meaningful ways.

Many student-athletes look back on their experiences playing for the School as some of their most valued Middle and Upper School memories.

Community

Perhaps one of the most treasured elements of sports is the community-building it can drive, and Bentley Athletics is no exception. From our teams' close-knit bonds to the connection of fans cheering in the stands to the spirited Upper School pep rallies in Town Meetings, athletics brings us all together in ways that few things can and are an indelible part of the Bentley experience.
