Bentley’s Lower School curriculum provides a strong foundation in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Language Arts instruction includes reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and handwriting. Reading is taught through the Reader's Workshop model that combines instruction in basic phonics and rich literature-based on textbooks and novels. Writing lessons include an emphasis on the process of pre-writing, editing, and final copy. The students have opportunities to use creative as well as expository writing.
A vibrant part of our curriculum includes art, music, physical education, and world languages. Art instruction uses a variety of media and focuses on the fundamental skills of visual art. The music program emphasizes choral music, with the entire Lower School participating in a Winter and a Spring concert. The Physical Education program provides instruction in motor development, physical fitness, cooperative games, and team sports. An introduction to Spanish, Mandarin and French language and culture is provided in Kindergarten and first grade. Beginning in second grade, students and their families commit to study one of the three languages through fifth grade. In all areas of the Lower School curriculum, students are encouraged to use technology as a tool for the learning and research process.
