Dual Campus Musical: A "Spelling Bee" Success

Julia Shurman ‘19
Last weekend, the Bentley community welcomed the school’s rendition of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee with a dual campus musical. Every other year, middle schoolers and high schoolers work together to create and perform in a musical that brings together and enthralls our community. (Video excerpt)
The show took place at the Lesher Center’s Del Valle Theatre in Walnut Creek and had a total of four performances. It was about a county spelling bee with very distinct contestants who differed greatly in their personalities and characteristics. The musical was a hilarious and wonderful production with songs such as “Magic Foot” and “Prayer of the Comfort Counselor.” At each performance, a few members of the audience were taken up on stage and competed in the spelling bee. It challenged the actors to improve their improvisation skills and kept the audience engaged and laughing at the varying spelling abilities of the chosen audience members up on stage. Sophia Campion ‘19 says the audience participation “made it funnier and so did the fact they the actors had to adapt when the people actually got the word right and it wasn't expected.” With numerous rehearsals each week after school, the actors’ hard work paid off as the singing and acting were amazing and the actors never broke character.
Each year, the Bentley Dual Campus Musical helps bring together our community for both the actors and audience members. Dominic Goggins-Rendón ‘19 – having starred in now five Bentley musicals – played Vice Principal Panch in the recent production. When asked what he likes most about being in Bentley musicals, he said, “Probably all the people that come together during it, especially during the dual campus musicals, because there are a lot of people that I wouldn't necessarily interact with as much, but now we all kind of know each other a lot more and it’s a good little foundation.”
The Bentley musical is always a joy to see and something to look forward to each year. A special thanks to directors Ms. Austin, Mr. McWilliams, and Mr. Weible as well as all the cast members who worked hard to make a fantastic show!
