5th Grade Solar Oven Cook-Off!

Thursday saw 5th graders engage in a Solar Oven Cook-Off, where they aimed to utilize solar energy for cooking. Through constructing and testing ovens, students applied their understanding of solar radiation properties, including absorption, conduction, convection, radiation, reflection, and insulation. This endeavor demanded innovation, collaboration, and adaptable thinking. The Blue Lake area showcased a diverse array of box ovens and even a tire cooker.

The summer spirit permeated through group names and themes. With pride, students served a variety of treats, such as hotdogs, chocolate fondue, pizza, mini muffins, chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls, caramel, miso soup, and mango banana bread, to their peers and some teachers. It was a delicious way to take advantage of the sunny day and the solar ovens, of course!
