A New Mini-term: Writer’s Salon Debut

Middle School students in this brand new Mini-term offering explored all types of creative writing with workshops led by a songwriter, a screenplay writer, two novelists, and a memoirist. Workshop activities included:
  • creating a song lyric based on an observation they had made that day.
  • writing a short scene retelling the start of their day -- from waking up to breakfast -- including scene descriptions, action directives, dialogue, and character notes.
  • creating an in-depth character profile based on a character they had in mind or were already writing about, including background story, favorite things, dislikes, fears, and ambitions.
  • adding sensory details to their work: rewriting a paragraph in a current work-in-progress, adding all five senses to the description.
  • and, finally learning the steps of building a plot.
Students wrote songs, immersed themselves in world-building, and wrote short stories.
